In January 2010, Shelley joined the Weekly Writers’ Workshop, http://underthecuckooclock.org/, a Northern Colorado-based writers group that meets on a weekly basis to workshop and write.
In November 2009, she won three writing awards from the National Newspaper Association: 1st place, best business feature story; 3rd place, best agriculture story; 3rd place, best education and literacy story.
She also won writing and photography awards from the Colorado and Virginia press associations and the Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters Association:
• Best feature store, 3rd place, Virginia Press Association, February 2004.
• Best news photo, 3rd place, Virginia Press Association, February 2003.
• Best news story, 2nd place, Colorado Press Association, February 2000.
• Feature writing, 2nd place, Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters Association, February 1999.
In November 2002, Shelley was awarded the Sterling Ruritan Business/ Professional Award, Sterling, Va.
Shelley published short story, “What You Says,” in the Greyrock Review, Colorado State University, in 1995.
Shelley was a member of the Ashburn Ruritan Club, a community service club in Ashburn, Va., from 2002 to 2008. She also served in the Kiwanis Club, a community service club in Sterling, Co., from 1997 to 2000.
While attending Colorado State University, Shelley received several academic honors. She was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, an honor society, in 1996; Phi Beta Kappa, an honor society, in 1993; and the Golden Key National Honor Program in 1992. She was a participant in the Colorado State University Honors Program from 1989 to 1993 and was named an Honors Scholar in December 1993.
